Robert Lowell Chapman, affectionately known as Bob, soared into the skies one final time on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the age of 93. Born in Presho, South Dakota, on April 27, 1932, Bob lived a life defined by adventure, integrity, and a deep love for aviation.
Bob’s remarkable career as a pilot took him around the world with Pan American Airlines and Northwest Airlines. After hanging up his commercial wings, he continued his professional journey with Sperry Corporation, where he eventually retired. But Bob never truly left the skies—he remained an active general aviation pilot, known for his unwavering commitment to safety and doing the right thing in the cockpit.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was a devoted family man. He shared 71 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Marcene, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Thorson (late husband Tom); his son, Rob (wife Nancy); and a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry forward his spirit of curiosity, kindness, and courage.
Bob’s life was a testament to the joy of flight, the strength of family, and the quiet power of doing what’s right. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
