Remembered as a highly respected, caring, and relentless police investigator, Jay Andrew Alberio of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday, November 5, at the age of 66.
Jay was born on December 21, 1957, in Superior, Wisconsin. He grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota, graduating from Bloomington Jefferson High School in 1975.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corp from 1975 to 1979, stationed in Camp Pendleton, California.
He received an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from Normandale Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management from Bethel University.
Jay loved being a police officer, his career of 27 years. He joined the Woodbury Police Department in 1986 and was promoted to Sergeant in 1989 and Commander in 2003.
Jay had many duties and responsibilities over the years, but his true passion was being a detective and serving as a Commander for the Investigations Unit. He worked closely with prosecutors, judges, and neighboring departments and considered being part of the Investigative Unit, a true honor.
His legacy also includes being a beloved mentor to the officers he supervised and a strong believer in treating victims with compassion.
Jay proudly served on Washington County Special Response Team for over 10 years, attended the FBI National Academy, and completed Firefighter training.
Jay retired from the Woodbury Police Department in 2012. The next year, he joined the FindJodi team as a volunteer dedicated to finding abducted Iowa news anchor Jodi Huisentruit. He continued to work with FindJodi until shortly before his passing, even while in the hospital.

After retirement, Jay and his wife, Judy, spent ten years wintering in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, where they built their beach home, Corgi Cottage.
Jay enjoyed golfing and spent his retirement years working at the Eagle Valley Golf Course. He formed many close friendships through golf, loved his time on the course, and took many golf trips with his dear friends.
Jay was preceded in death by his father, Jose, and his brother Jeff.
He is survived by his wife Judy; mother, Joy Smith; brother, Joe (Kathy) Alberio; sisters, Julie (Scott) Springer and Juanita (Grant) Peterson; brothers-in-law, John (Deb) Boll, Ray (Charlot) Boll, Al Boll, and Wayne (Ayako) Boll; and sisters-in-law, Jean (Winston) Kindem and Mary Amos.
Jay loved his nieces and nephews so very much. He was so proud of them and their accomplishments. His philosophy was to give them his love and support and make sure they always knew how proud he was to be their uncle.
The family would like to thank the Lakeview Hospital, Stillwater Minnesota Oncology Team and Palliative Care team for their endless care and support. The family would also like to thank Lakeview Homecare and Hospice for the care and compassion they showed Jay in his final days.
