Gerald was born on December 23, 1944, to Roy and Rose Moe in Glenwood and was raised on the family farm in Barsness Township. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community servant. He passed away peacefully on Friday, February 14 at Glacial Ridge Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in a family of nine children, Jay graduated from Glenwood High School 1962. After high school he joined the U.S. Army and served for 3 years and was honorably discharged in 1965. He worked various jobs before enrolling at Alexandria Technical College, where he earned his degree in law enforcement. His passion for service led him to a distinguished 30-year career in law enforcement. He served as a City Police Officer, Glenwood Chief of Police (1975-1979), Sheriff of Pope County (1982-1993) and Sheriff of Pennington County (1993-1999). Jay dedicated himself to the safety and well-being of his community no matter where he was. After his career in law, he worked in collections for Preferred Credit in St. Cloud for 17 years before finally retiring. Jay and Paulette returned to Glenwood in 2018 so they could be closer to the area he loved.
Beyond his career, Jay was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in hunting, fishing, trapping and fur trading. He had a passion for many things— coaching for the youth wrestling program when his boys were young, refurbishing antique furniture, flea marketing, and working as a licensed auctioneer. However, his greatest happiness came from time spent with family, he loved taking care of his grandkids, hunting with his boys on the Anderson and Becker farms and enjoying the cabin on Lake Minnewaska.
Gerald is survived by his wife, (Paulette); children Paul (Denise) of Sartell, Luke (Amy) of St Cloud; grandchildren Peyton, Bennett, and Jaxon; brothers Arnold and Jim. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
His legacy of service, love, and dedication will never be forgotten.
There will be a celebration of Jay’s life on Saturday, March 8 from 12:00-2:00 at Captain’s Bar and Grill in Glenwood.
