Fred attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa where he met his future wife Norma Jean McCallum. He graduated in June of 1952 and was married to Norma on November 22, 1952. After graduation, Fred attended Wartburg Theological Seminary. During his years of Seminary study, he worked multiple jobs to help support a growing family. Then with a wife and two sons, he completed the Seminary program and was ordained in June of 1956.
The first parish Fred served consisted of two churches about 35 miles apart in South Dakota, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft and Immanual Lutheran in rural Belle Prairie. In September of 1957, Fred received a call to rebuild Golden Ridge Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND. It was a mission church that had been destroyed by a tornado in June of 1957. In 1962, Fred was asked to be the organizing paster of a new mission church in Jamestown, ND. Then in August of 1966 he was called to Trinity Lutheran Church of Enderlin and Anslem, ND. From November of 1972 through June 1984, Fred served at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND. Fred and Norma moved to Mesa, AZ in July 1984, where he served as Senior Pastor at Victory Lutheran Church until October 1990.
Fred retired from the ministry in October 1990 and moved to Port St. Lucie, FL, where he and Norma could be close to their sons, Stephen and David. However, Fred’s first retirement was short lived. In May 1991 he was installed as the pastor of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Port St. Lucie, where he served through February 1995.
Fred had many hobbies and interests. He was always building something; everything from wooden Nativity Scenes, to clocks, to decks for his children and grandchildren, to stage sets, to a cabin. He was an avid antique collector and genealogist. Fred enjoyed traveling and took many amazing trips with family. Summers always included cabin time and family gatherings nearly always included playing cards.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean (McCallum) Moberg; parents, James & Ethel Moberg; sister, Marlys Mehring; son, Stephen Moberg; and grandsons, David and Jeremy Moberg.
He is survived by daughter-in-law, Phyllis (& Frank) Irwin; son, David (Yvette) Moberg; daughter Ruth (Jim) Walbon; and son, Peter (Lori) Moberg; eleven grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life gathering on Friday, September 15th between 4:00 and 8:00 pm at the home of Jim and Ruth Walbon in North Branch, MN. A short memorial service will begin at 6:00 pm.
A second celebration service for family and friends in Florida will be held at a later date at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
