Evelyn Katherine “Kathy” Schultz died 16 November 2023 from a rare, untreatable disease called Corticobasal Degeneration, which lingered for more than a year before her diagnosis and more than a year afterward. One may be thankful she has been relieved of her disease to enter into the glory of our heavenly Father.
She was born on 9 October 1937 in Minneapolis, MN to the family of John Jacob Hanson Jr. and Evelyn Katherine Hanson. Their family embraced four siblings, including Katherine. The four are Gilbert [decd.], Evelyn Katherine Schultz, born Hanson [decd.], Ludmilla Isaacson, born Hanson, and John Jacob III.
Kathy's secondary education was at Columbia Heights High School. Kathy's baccalaureate degree (BS in Education) was from Saint Cloud State University. A decade later she earned an MS in Human Development and the Family from the University of Nebraska.
Before marriage, Kathy taught grades at Keewatin and Rosemont, MN. After marriage she taught at Nashville, TN; San Jose, CA; Northfield, Hibbing, and Coleraine, MN.
Kathy met her future husband Donald “Don” Schultz through her involvement in the Lutheran Student Association (LSA) at the University of Minnesota, of which he was the President. They were deeply attracted to one another, until they realized that what they had found was mutual love which they dare not pursue. On the first of September 1962 their marriage was solemnized at First Lutheran Church, Columbia Heights, by the Rev. John A. Peterson, pastor and liturgist and by the Rev. Dr. George Hall, U of M student pastor, as homilist.
In the years to follow, Kathy's and Don's lives were enmeshed. After a short honeymoon to Northern Minnesota, they moved to Nashville, TN to make the first (1962) of several homes, where they sought to improve their educations, to pursue their careers, and to grow their family. These homes together with approximate dates were in Oakland, CA (1963), Nashville, TN (1966), Northfield, MN (1969), Wayne, NE (1975), Saint Paul, MN (1981), Chisholm, MN (1985), Helsinki, Finland (1995), Remer, MN (1998), Cold Spring, MN (2000), Edina, MN (2008).
The Master of Science in Human Development and the Family Kathy earned during the years when her life was in Nebraska involved many courses and much research. During these years Kathy drove 400 miles or more two days of each week to meet with her instructors and complete her programs of instruction. This led Kathy to a new and different career path, beyond teaching in the grades to adult education. As an extension of what she had done before, she was now providing instruction to young people to aid them in bringing up their own next generation.
Without doubt, Kathy's relationships within her growing family became the central focus of her life. Kathy and her new husband Don led to the birth to their two children, Karl (born in 1966) and Amy (born in 1970). Kathy was an extraordinary Mom to Karl and Amy. These two in turn each gave birth to two youngsters. Karl together with Karen (born Anderberg) bred Ted and Alex. Amy together with Mark Eggert bred Rachel and Jake. These grandchildren became a new and enriching focus of Kathy's life as her family grew substantially larger and richer in variety. She delighted in being Teacher and Spouse and Mother.
There will be a Celebration of Kathy's Life, at 11 am on December 15, 2023 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 500 Blake Road, Edina, MN. The service will be preceded beginning at 10 am by an hour of greeting and will be followed at noon by a light luncheon. Following these observances, Kathy's cremains will be committed to the earth at the Schultz family gravesite at Mount Hope Cemetery, Carver, MN.
