A son of Ernest and Catherine Shriver, Dave was born on May 16, 1941 on the family farm in Tyler, Dave grew up with his older siblings Dorothy, James, Carolyn, and his younger brother Rodney and younger sister Kathleen. Only Carolyn survives Dave.
Dave went to a two-room school, Star School, through eighth grade before attending Tyler high school, from which he graduated in May, 1959. Dave was a great high school athlete, earning multiple letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. Growing up in the house his grandfather built from a Sears Roebuck kit, he tended livestock and crops as befits a farm kid, and for a while lived with extended family to help on their farm. Alas, Dave was never bit by the farm bug and never missed it after leaving home.
After a year at the University of Minnesota, Dave joined the U.S. Army in 1960, serving in Texas, South Korea on the DMZ, and on Long Island in New York. Although his time in the army was brief, Dave, with the rest of us, was proud of his military service.
Dave began working for Pillsbury in 1964 as a clerk in what became the information technology department and ultimately retired from the same department, which by then had been acquired by General Mills. Appropriately, Dave took less pleasure from his occupation than from his family, both immediate and extended.
After meeting at a youth group Dave married Ruth (Casey) Shriver on October 30, 1965 in Litchfield, Minnesota, and they lived in South Minneapolis for over 30 years and enjoyed 57 years together altogether.
Dave and Ruth have two children, Ernest (Pat) Shriver and Mary Shriver. Where he really blossomed, though, was when he started having grandchildren (Rachel Ratzlaff Shriver, Abigail Shriver, Jacob Shriver, Brianna Dickel, and Colin Dickel). Dave loved going to all the t-ball, soccer and hockey games, band and orchestra concerts, graduations and other events important to his grandchildren, even sometimes volunteering at their schools!
Dave and Ruth enjoyed their second home on Cedar Island Lake near Richmond, Minnesota until taking care of it got to be too much. After leaving South Minneapolis, they also had homes in Bloomington and Edina before spending the past two years at Carondelet Village in St. Paul.
A funeral mass celebrating Dave will be held at St. Joan of Arc Church (4537 3rd Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55419) on Saturday, April 29th at 2 pm. The visitation will start at 1 pm, and refreshments will be served in the church basement after mass.
