Dale B. Montgomery of Burnsville, Minnesota, formerly of Shakopee, Minnesota, passed through the gates of heaven Sunday, November 21, 2021 at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis. Dale was born on March 8, 1933 in Weaver, Minnesota to James and Alta (Bennett) Montgomery. The family moved to Plainview, Minnesota, where Dale graduated from Plainview High School. Together he and his brothers excelled in playing baseball and basketball. After graduating high school, Dale served two years in the Army. Dale then attended Winona State College where he received many accolades for his talents in baseball, and met his first wife, Helen Schmidt.
After graduation from Winona State, Dale accepted a teaching and coaching position in Bird Island, Minnesota where he and Helen started their family. Dale, Helen and the two boys moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin for a short period before they planted their roots in Shakopee, Minnesota. Dale and Helen added the final piece to their family and Shakopee became home to raise their three boys, Paul, Brian and Tom. Dale taught physical education and coached at Shakopee Sr. High for 27 years. He coached baseball and football in the early years and golf and football in the later years, but by far his favorite was football. Every year, during the summer practice, he would come home a little hoarse after encouraging the boys to be their best. He also taught multiple generations’ drivers education behind the wheel and enjoyed this until he was 80 years old. Dale was a gifted teacher, coach and mentor with impeccable character that earned him respect from countless students.
Helen passed away in 1982. On a December day in 1983, Dale was introduced to Eunice Hanson. Angels were looking down on Dale and Eunice as this wintery courtship led to marriage on June 23, 1984. Dale and Eunice resided in Minneapolis until sons, Robert and Daniel graduated high school. They then built a home in Burnsville to call their own. It was a home that hosted many Thanksgivings and other events to a growing family, to which they were extremely proud of. In their retirement years, Dale and Eunice enjoyed their time at the cabin in Bayfield, Wisconsin and their winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Interests may not always have been shared, but their love for each other and their love for God was the recipe for that perfect life. They balanced golf with berry picking, watching sports with reading books and relaxation with baking; it all worked in harmony to solidify love of family and love of life.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice Montgomery of Burnsville; six Children, Paul Montgomery (Sherri) of Prior Lake, Brian Montgomery (Linda) of Rosemount, Tom Montgomery (Carrie) of Livermore, CA, Dan Hanson of Woodbury, Robert Hanson (Trina) of Hudson, WI and Kris Hanson of Chesterfield, VA; nineteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Montgomery of Cannon Falls; many nieces; nephews; other relatives and very dear friends.
