Char attended St. Cloud State University. Prior to having her first son, Char was a flight attendant with North Central Airlines. She then owned and operated Zorka and Ollie’s specialty deli for five years and served as a chemical dependency counselor for the Bloomington school district where she worked with many young students regarding chemical dependency issues. AA and her AA friends and community were an important part of her life. In addition to having an entrepreneurial spirit, Char was a natural REALTOR. She loved working with and mentoring some of her colleagues who were new to real estate and cultivating their growing careers. She was passionate in helping clients, friends, and family members find their dream homes.
Char was a loving mother, partner, and sister. She spent many years at the ice rink watching her boys and then grandkids play her favorite sport - hockey. She loved watching her grandkids swim competitively, play soccer, hockey and lacrosse, and attended as many games as possible. Being an active person, she loved to work on projects with her grandkids, go canoeing down the river, and spending time at the cabin. She was passionate about animals and spent much of her free time with her horses and dogs. She loved showing Jimmy and Collan at horseshows throughout the Midwest, Oklahoma and Southern states. She and Jimmy won many championships and Reserve Championships and were invited to the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Char loved her dogs and spent many years training and showing them at local dog shows. She may have also been known to sneak treats when nobody was looking.
Diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2020, Char continued to show an appreciation for the little things in life we so often take for granted. Despite the disease having stolen her memories, we could always see a glimpse of the mother and grandmother we loved. While attending Gophers Women's basketball games, she enjoyed watching the band and Goldie’s antics as much as the game itself. She maintained a spirit of joy and excitement throughout the last years of her life.
Char is survived by her loving family: partner of over 40 years, Kay Halvorson; sons Scott (Jenn Medin) and Paul (Cari Hill), sister Sallie Danelz, grandchildren Taylor (Jordan Nies), Ben, Clare, and Liam, former husband Keith Sondrall, and 2 great grandchildren, Fern and Clover Nies and her beloved canines Ronee and Millie.
The family would like to thank Lynnette Skramstad for the care and compassion given to Char over the past couple of years. We would also like to thank Methodist Hospital and Hospice for the care and compassion shown in the last couple weeks of her life.
Family and friends will be invited to a future Celebration of Life. Details TBD.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in their honor to the Alzheimer’s Association of Minnesota at www.alz.org/mnnd or to a charity of your choice.
