Andrew “Andy” Callinan, age 47 of St Louis Park, MN, passed away unexpectedly on February 12, 2025. Andy was one of a kind—a devoted husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Charismatic and kind, he had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued. His presence filled a room, both in terms of his physical stature and his captivating personality, and his laughter was infectious.
From childhood, Andy’s energy was boundless. He was fast, setting his elementary school record in the mile run mile that stood for well over 20 years. On the basketball court, he didn’t just play - he dominated, leading with sheer size, skill, grit, and determination. He never turned down a bet or a dare, always pushing limits, much to the dismay of his mom, Kathy. As a kid, due to his speed, he was always the one asked to light the firecracker or ring the doorbell, and Andy always happily obliged.
Andy’s love for life extended beyond sports. His friendships were deep, his impact immeasurable. He was always there when you needed him, making life lighter and funnier. Andy shared a love for a good flannel shirt with his dad, Dick; that’s if you could get Andy to put a shirt on at all. (*Much to the dismay of his friends, Andy could follow-up a workout at the gym with a Mountain Dew and an assortment of candy and somehow build more muscle.)
Andy, from a family of proud Irishmen, loved St. Patrick’s Day. Perhaps it was luck of the Irish that would lead him to meeting the love of his life and future wife, Suzanne, while celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in 2002. To Andy and Suzanne their dogs—Wrigley, Layla, and Surly—were part of the family, a reflection of Andy’s love of dogs and his warm and loyal heart. On weekends, Andy loved spending time at his family’s cabin in northern MN with the people he loved the most – Suzanne, family, friends and of course his dogs.
Andy lived his early life with passion and purpose, leaving behind a lasting legacy of kindness, wit, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. In his recent years, Andy struggled with difficult mental health and addiction challenges which stemmed from a series of painful and reoccurring back injuries. Even through these challenges, Andy was always able to make his warming presence felt and he will be remembered for his positive spirit and kindness even during his more challenging years.
Though his spirit remains through stories and memories, Andy will be dearly missed by his wife, Suzanne; mother, Kathy; siblings, Molly and Will (Lauren); beloved nephew, Thomas and niece, Adalyn; and many other relatives and dear friends. Andy was preceded in death by his father, Richard “Dick” Callinan. Andy will be dearly missed.
A remembrance for Andy will be held on Saturday April 5, 2025, from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Jameson’s Irish Pub, 886 Smith Ave. S., West St. Paul, MN 55118. Please stop by and share your favorite story or memory of Andy with his family and friends. Andy's family asks that you wear a touch of green in honor of his memory.
