Albin "Al" Stephen Dubiak, age 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2024, surrounded in love by his family.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Maria (Gelon) Dubiak, and his sister, Josephine Peterson.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sharon (Bohling); his daughter, Anna (Jason) Lima; his son, Stephen (Laurie); his treasured granddaughters, Allie and Rachel; and by many friends and relatives who loved him dearly. His nephews affectionately called him “Uncle Albie!”
Grounded in his Slovak heritage, Al was born and raised in East Chicago, Indiana, after his parents immigrated to this country from Czechoslovakia. He helped run their family tavern and restaurant while also completing his education. Al attended Bishop Noll High School, earned a business degree from Indiana University and received an MBA from The University of Arizona. After graduate school, Al and Sharon moved to Shoreview, Minnesota where they established roots, raised their two children, and became active members of the community. Al enjoyed a wonderful career as a Portfolio Manager and retired after 32 years with U.S. Bank. He took enormous pride and satisfaction working in the local investment industry, forming many lifelong friendships along the way, and serving as a mentor to many novice investors. Al also served in the Army National Guard for several years.
During his retirement years, he and Sharon enjoyed spending the winter months in Oro Valley, Arizona. He loved playing golf, enjoying nature and the beautiful mountain sunsets, and entertaining family and friends. Al was also devoted to many organizations including those that supported Catholic education, military and veterans, preservation of outdoors and wildlife, Ukrainian refugees, and cancer support programs.
Rooted in his Catholic upbringing and education, he lived his faith in all aspects of his life. He and his family were longtime members at St. Odilia Catholic Church in Shoreview. Al was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and duck hunting, loved making and sharing his Slovak cabbage rolls and Roshky cookies, and tending to his garden for tomatoes and vegetables. He was a true sports enthusiast who loved cheering for all Minnesota teams, as well as Indiana Hoosiers basketball, and spent many years coaching his children in basketball and soccer. He was a proud “sports grandpa” and loved nothing more than watching his granddaughters on the basketball court.
Al was loyal to many and treasured his friends, from the hunting fields of South Dakota to the golf courses of Minnesota to the neighborhoods of Shoreview and Oro Valley. He loved bringing people together and brought joy and laughter to many, including the bestowment of numerous fun nicknames. Al will be remembered for his devotion to family, dry wit and humor, generous spirit, hard-work ethic, zest for life, love of this country, and sincere curiosity of others.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Interlachen Country Club, 6200 Interlachen Blvd, Edina, MN at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 6. Complimentary valet parking will be provided. A private interment will take place at St. Odilia Catholic Church. Memorials preferred to American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, in Rochester, Minnesota, Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, Indiana and Delta Waterfowl Foundation.
Our family would like to give special recognition to the many nurses and doctors at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota who provided excellent care for Al in his later years.
