He was born on May 18, 1928, near Warren Indiana, to Walter and Nellie (Will) Lloyd. Sam had been a resident of Englewood for 39 years. Sam graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1946 and worked at a variety of jobs until joining the army in 1949. After basic training, he took specialized training in office machine repair and was assigned to the quartermaster of the 2nd Armored Division at Ft. Hood, Texas. The 2nd Armored Division was sent to Germany during the Korean conflict. He returned to the US and was discharged in 1951.
He married Thelma J. Baker in 1950 and they lived in Ft. Wayne, Indiana for 12 years, where he was service manager for Royal Typewriter Company until they moved to Traverse City, Michigan in 1963. There they owned and operated Lloyd Business Machines Co. and Lloyd Leasing Co. They sold the business in 1983 and moved to New Port Richey, Florida, where they lived until 1986, and then moved to Englewood, Florida.
He loved fishing in Lemon Bay. They also maintained a summer home in Huntington, Indiana, where both he and his wife had relatives. Sam loved the little acre they owned and he planted numerous trees and gardened a large plot of vegetables, which he gave to friends and relatives. Sam and Thelma had 3 daughters, all of them born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was a member of Englewood Methodist Church, which he attended regularly. He took special interest in the Helping Hands organization, collecting food from his fellow residents in Brook to Bay Mobile Home Park to donate to the needy.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Thelma Jean (Baker) Lloyd; two daughters, Gail Lynne Lloyd of Huntington Indiana, and Teresa Renee (Michael) Korson of Rotonda West, Florida, and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Garrett, Donald, Clyde, Harold Dean and one sister Pauline Boxell, and daughter Cheryl Jensen of Paw Paw, Michigan. A memorial service will be held at Englewood Methodist Church (Doan Chapel), 700 E. Dearborn St., Englewood, FL 34223, on Saturday, March 15 at 2:00 pm.
