ROGER BRIAN GORDON, 79, of Venice, Florida, formerly of Springfield, IL and Council Bluffs, IA, passed away at home on Monday December 18, 2017, at 4:45 pm. He was born June 28, 1938, in Alliance, Ohio, the son of Leslie and Lillian Bird Gordon. Both parents led him home.
He was married to Shirley Markwell, then to Patricia Lieske, both now deceased; on December 14, 2008, he was married to Norma Schweitzer Browning at Grace Lutheran Church in Springfield, IL, by Rev. Thomas B. Christell, Jr. Norma survives; also surviving are his daughter, Stacy (Cliff) McGuire of Des Moines, IA; three sons, Kent (Sonja) Gordon of Buffalo Grove, IL; Kevin (Nancy) Gordon of Omaha, NE; and Greg (Tami) Gordon of Council Bluffs, IA; two step-sons, Guy (Ana Martinez, now deceased) Lieske of New Castle, PA and Randall (Beth) Browning of Petersburg, IL; two step-daughters, Sandra Lynn Browning and Nancee Pam Carter of Nokomis, FL; sister-in-law Eleanor Sakris of Springfield, IL; caregiver Carrie Jenema of Venice, FL; grandchildren and step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, many aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members and friends.
Roger attended schools in Council Bluffs, IA, where he enjoyed music and sports. He was graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1957. After graduation, he attended DuPage College for one year, then became a Vice-President of Maintenance for the Burlington/North Railroad. Following that, Roger became an award-winning salesman for Sentry Life Insurance Company. He also owned and operated several personal businesses.
Roger was a baptized and confirmed member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs. When he returned there in 2008, he attended St. John Lutheran Church. While in Springfield, IL he was an active member of Historic Grace Lutheran Church, then after moving to Venice, Florida in March of 2016, became a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Nokomis, FL. Roger was blessed with a very handsome baritone singing voice and was an active member of the choirs in his schools and churches. He truly loved his Lord, his family, his friends and his pets (especially his long-haired Dachshund, Chloe) and was a very devoted husband to Norma. He had many, many health problems during his lifetime, but his sense-of-humor never wavered and he wore his faith beautifully.
Graveside Services and burial will be on April 21, 2018, at 1:00 pm in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Council Bluffs, IA, with Rev. Lowell Hennings officiating. Also on April 25, 2018 at 6:00 pm, a memorial service will be held at Historic Grace Lutheran Church, Springfield, IL, and Rev. Thomas B. Christell officiating. The family has asked that memorials be sent to Grace Lutheran Church, 714 East Capitol Avenue, Springfield, IL 62701; or Emanuel Lutheran Church, 2444 N. Broadway, Council Bluffs, IA 51503
