Marty was born to Lucille May and Joseph Eberhardt in Chicago, Illinois. He was the second son of six children who grew up together in the St Ben’s neighborhood on the north side of the city. Marty attended grammar and then high school at the St. Benedict Schools with many of his neighbors and friends. Following high school, Marty attended Mayfair College.
While in high school, Marty developed his musical skills as a bass player in various Chicago area rock bands. With several friends, Marty formed the band, Silver Heels, which toured the United States. In his early twenties, Marty and his friend, the late Donnie Gerhardt, traveled the world for a year. He traveled throughout Europe and visited his family’s ancestral home in Wuppendorf. He also traveled to places considered to be very exotic and remote at the time, visiting Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey and India.
Upon his return to Chicago, he opened up a head shop and hip clothing store – Evergreen. He kept his store stocked with the latest of hippie fashion and always kept the store meticulously clean and orderly. In 1978, the California music industry beckoned Marty to come. He established Sound Image, a recording studio, in North Hollywood. After 14 years, he moved to the famous Sound City in Van Nuys. With Marty’s leadership, Sound Image produced over 100 gold and platinum albums for many of the top acts in the music industry. In 2021, Marty retired to Florida, to be closer to his brother and sisters.
Marty will be remembered for being quite a story teller and conversationalist. Everywhere that Marty went in the Midwest, California and most recently, Florida, he would meet new people and make them his friends. He will be missed by new friends and old ones alike.
He is survived by his two sons, Marcus and Miles, and his grandchildren Penelope and Sam.
His brother, Joseph F. Eberhardt, and his sisters, Mary Anne (James) Ostrenga, Lucy May (Alix) Polyne, and Rita Therese (Terry) Murray all reside in southwest Florida, along with a nephew, nieces, grand nieces and grand nephews. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Jerome, in 2000.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/fort-myers-cremation for the Eberhardt family.
