Leonard Isaac Klein, age 92, passed away on December 13, 2024, in Naples, Florida. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Leonard was the son of the late Samuel and Reba Klein and a beloved brother to Sidney Klein (deceased) (Myrna, deceased) and Stanley Klein (deceased) (Denise). He was a cherished uncle to Ken, Steve, and Shel.
A proud graduate of Central High School in Philadelphia, Leonard formed lifelong friendships during his time there and graduated in 1950. He earned a business degree from Penn State University in 1954 before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Leonard returned home to work at the family grocery business, Klein's Supermarket. At age 50, he embarked on a remarkable new chapter by earning a Master of Social Work degree from Temple University. This began a second career as a social worker in Philadelphia and later as a global volunteer. Leonard served two missions with the Peace Corps and worked with various non-profit organizations across Central Asia, Africa, and Europe. His efforts focused on empowering women and improving the lives of marginalized communities in countries such as Kazakhstan, Egypt, and Poland.
Leonard was a devoted father to his three children: Karen Klein of Bainbridge Island, Washington; Kim Yarden (Shahar) of Waco, Texas; and Jeff Klein (Darla) of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He found great joy in being a grandfather to Ryan, Batyah, Didi, Shlomit, Nathaniel, Rebekah and great-grandfather to Arden. He is also survived by his long-time partner Bep Sukaskas and the mother of his children, Florence Klein.
Leonard’s life was defined by service, compassion, and an enduring commitment to making the world a better place. His memory will be treasured by all who knew him. May his legacy continue to inspire those whose lives he touched. To honor Leonard’s memory, donations can be made to the Peace Corps (https://www.peacecorps.gov/donate/) or a charity of your choice.
