Tobin (Harold) Opheim of Fort Myers, FL passed away peacefully on Friday, April 7th, 2023 after a brief battle with metastatic melanoma. Tobin was born April 12, 1949 to Sanford and Bertha (Manska) Opheim in Madison, WI. After graduating from Central High School in 1967, Tobin began his career working as a laborer for the City of Madison. He ended his 37-year long career as interim Superintendent of the Streets Division in the City of Madison. In 1967, Tobin married the love of his life, Susan Conlin Opheim, going on to have two children, Toby and Charlene. His biggest pride and joy were his two children, and four grandchildren.
Tobin played hockey for South Side Hockey Association at a young age and coached his children and many others. Tobin enjoyed playing baseball with friends and loved coaching his children and many others in West Madison Little League. He also loved to fish and hunt with family and friends. Tobin was an avid archer and bear hunter, making many trips to hunt in both Wisconsin and Canada with his special (crazy) group of friends, Rick, Ronnie, Mike, and Brad. Mediocre at best, Tobin enjoyed golf and cherished his annual spring golf outing to Biloxi with Al Schumacher and anyone brave enough to join them. Tobin had a gift of gab and enjoyed socializing with his friends and family. One of his proudest accomplishments was building his dream home on Lake Mohawksin in Tomahawk with the help of his close friends and family.
After retiring in 2004, Tobin split his time between his cottage in Tomahawk and home in Fort Myers, FL. He spent retirement traveling and cruising the world with his loving wife and friends, rooting for the Packers and Badgers, and hanging out with his kids and grandchildren. He loved seeing and hearing from his grandchildren, always looking forward to their annual Wisconsin summer vacation with their Papa. He especially enjoyed traveling with his son, Toby, trekking on a safari in Africa and touring Alaska on Harley Davidson motorcycles. Tobin’s goal in life was achieved to be the best husband, father and grandfather. His legacy lives on through his love, support, wisdom, character, and ethics in all that knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sanford and Bertha and brother-in-law, Bill.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Susan Conlin Opheim; his brothers, Tim Opheim (Gloria), and Dennis Opheim (Sue); his sister, Darlene Lazenby; his brothers-in-law, Steve Conlin (Diane Lobner) and Pat Conlin; his 2 children, Tobin Opheim (Christy Gullickson) and Charlene Opheim (Severn Thomas); his 4 grandchildren, Alex, Hannah, Reagan, and Jamal, as well as many aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of life will be held this summer on Sunday, July 23rd from 1-3pm at Olbrich Botanical Gardens (3330 Atwood Ave, Madison, WI). In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, WI where he helped build a giraffe enclosure and made many memories with his children and grandchildren. You may leave condolences, memories, and words of wisdom on the Neptune
