Gene Akin Blair

Born in West Van Lear, Kentucky in 1942, Gene began a long and dedicated career in the grocery industry at the age of 15 with Liberal Markets in Dayton, Ohio. Starting as a bag boy, he worked his way up to Manager and later became the Director of Operations for Schear’s Metro Markets. His strong work ethic, leadership and commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike.

After retiring, Gene moved to Fort Myers, Florida, where he became an active and beloved member of the Jamaica Bay community. He participated in groups such as the ROMEO’s, The Buckeye Club, and many other community activities. He was also proud to be a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Gene was a devoted member of the Eager Believers Bible Study group at McGregor Baptist Church, where he shared his faith and friendship with fellow members.

A loyal horse racing fan, Gene made regular trips to Keenland in the spring and fall. He took great pride in picking a winner and never missed an opportunity to remind others when he did. Known for his quick wit, warm humor, and ever-ready jokes, Gene brought joy and laughter to everyone he met. Gene never knew a stranger and always acknowledged everyone in the room everywhere he went.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thelma and Burns Blair and his brother, Larry Blair; and lifelong friend Bill Honeycutt. He is survived by his loving wife, Alice E. Blair; daughter, Michelle J. Blair; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Blake Churchill; grandchildren, Matthew Churchill, and Ashleigh and husband Caleb Kent.

Gene was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by everyone whose lives he touched.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 15, 2025 at 1:30 pm at the Jamaica Bay Veranda
