He was born on a remote Michigan farm in a blizzard during the Depression, the youngest of six children and “bonus baby” of Marjorie and Raymond Thompson. Tom graduated high school at age 16 and hitchhiked around the country before enrolling in college. His college career was interrupted when he enlisted as a supply sergeant in the US Army during the Korean War. A week after the end of his service, he met his beloved Mary Kay and they were married six months later.
Tom earned a degree in Industrial Engineering at Michigan State University, then embarked on a successful career in the grocery industry and later as an independent contractor. He would say, however, that his greatest accomplishment was his marriage of 66 years with Mary Kay and the family they raised together. He was happiest when his house was full of loved ones.
Tom was preceded in death by his brothers Robert, Stanley, Raymond, and Gordon; by his sister Marie; and by his beloved wife, Mary Kay.
He was the proud father of Mary Anne (Doug) Grieve, Stephen (Susan) Thompson, Stephanie (Don) Henderson, Jeffrey (Margaret) Thompson, David (Linda) Thompson, Fremont (Cathie TenHoopen) Thompson, and Susan (John) Kabana. He was the loving grandfather of Gordon (Sada), Kevin, Malcolm (Lorrie), Brian, Mallory (Adam), Rose (Drew), Noah, Bella, Dylan (Kiersten), Katherine (Alex), Susan (Daniel), Anne, Michael, Molly, Benjamin, Caitlin, Fremont, Hayley, and Holly (Craig). He was the delighted great-grandfather of Sterling, Pierson, Ainsley, Audrey, Jade, Lilly, Jack, Nik, Mia, Lukas, Elanor, Rowan, Magnolia, and Grady. He treasured his many nephews, nieces, and godchildren. He loved the children of his friends, and the friends of his children.
Tom was grateful for the friends he made throughout his life and was especially glad for the wonderful relationships he enjoyed in retirement on Manasota Key. Tom loved his life, right to the very end.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/fort-myers-cremati for the Thompson family.
