She was deeply influenced by her mother’s talents and her father’s work ethic. From a young age, Ellen exhibited a strong sense of responsibility, starting as a babysitter at 11 and saving for college. She attained the highest level of girl scout leadership while in high school and was an avid reader during her entire life. At age 12, she joined her church choir and actively participated in church choirs until her retirement.
Ellen attended Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where she pursued a degree in Apparel Design, later earning an M.A. in Media from Fairfield University and an MBA from the University of New Haven. Her education laid the foundation for a career that blended artistic passion with pragmatic leadership.
Love and Family
Ellen’s love story with Herb began serendipitously in the summer of 1962 when they reconnected in their hometown. A chance meeting led to a July 4th weekend date, sparking a romance that led to their marriage on July 18, 1964. Over the years, they built a life together filled with adventure, shared passions, and a deep commitment to family. Their children, Karl and Lise, and later their grandchildren, brought immense joy and fulfillment to their lives. During 2024, Ellen and Herb celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends.
Career and Community Contributions
Ellen’s professional journey was diverse and impactful. She began her career as an art educator, shaping young minds in Massachusetts, Illinois, and New York. After moving to Connecticut, she transitioned into museum leadership, serving as Executive Director of the Fairfield Children's Museum, the Silvermine Guild of Artists, and the Children’s Museum of Arts, Science and Industry in Bridgeport, CT.
Her contributions extended into public service, where she worked as the spokesperson for the Connecticut State Police and later as the Director of Communications for the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services. Her work earned national recognition, including an invitation to serve as Southeast Regional Ombudsman for the Internal Revenue Service upon her retirement from State government.
Ellen was a leader in various organizations, including serving as President of the Fairfield County Public Relations Association, and two-year terms as President for the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in Connecticut and Florida, and the Symphony Society of the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra. She also played a crucial role in fostering young talent by organizing instrumental and vocal competitions.
Passion for the Arts and Sailing
A lifelong advocate for the arts, Ellen founded the annual Trumbull Arts Festival and chaired the Trumbull Arts Commission. Her passion for creativity extended beyond her professional life into her personal pursuits in design and painting.
Alongside Herb, Ellen developed a deep love for sailing. They were active members of multiple yacht clubs, including the Black Rock, Fayerweather, and Pequonnock Yacht Clubs. Ellen became an Advanced Pilot in the United States Power Squadrons and was honored with a Life Membership. Their adventures took them on extensive sailing trips along the East Coast and the British Virgin Islands, and cruising throughout Florida during retirement.
