Edwin Ames Wilcox, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 21, 2025 in Naples, Florida, after a six year battle with Alzheimer’s. Born on December 17, 1938, Ed lived a life marked by dedication to family, professional achievement, and a love for adventure.
Ed grew up in Ithaca, NY where, as kids, he and his siblings were locally famous for swimming 2 miles across Cayuga Lake. His academic journey began in a one-room schoolhouse across the street from his home. After graduating from Ithaca High School, Ed earned his Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering from RPI and his Master’s in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University. Ed later went on to earn his MBA from the University of Buffalo. His career spanned leadership roles at Union Carbide Corp., where he lived and worked in Frankfurt, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. He then went on to become President and COO of AmeriGas, President and COO of MetPro Corp., and Executive Vice-President of The March Group.
Ed was a dedicated golfer, particularly proud of hitting a hole in one three times during his lifetime. He held memberships at Waynesboro Country Club in Paoli, Pennsylvania and Naples Grande Golf Club. As a man of many interests, he also loved sailing, skiing, and scuba diving. Ed was an Eagle Scout who enjoyed hiking and camping, culminating in a trek to the base camp of Mt. Everest in 1980. Ed’s love of travel led him to enjoy these activities in many countries around the world. Living for time spent with his family and friends, Ed’s favorite adventures were those spent with his wife, son, daughter, and grandchildren. He was known for his humor, selflessness, and ability to connect with people of all ages.
Ed is survived by his wife of 61 years Lynne Boysen Wilcox, children Brian Ames Wilcox and Sara Wilcox Hult (husband Dave), grandchildren Justin and Kylie Hult, nieces Michele Sullivan and Shannon Wilcox, and nephew Chris Skellett. He was predeceased by his parents Frederick Atwater Wilcox and Helen Ames Wilcox; his brother Frederick “Porky” A. Wilcox Jr.; and his sister Jean Skellett.
