Ed was the sixth child born on April 10, 1934 to Julius Edward and Agnes Artwohl in Allentown, Pennsylvania on an Easter Sunday, hence his family nickname, Bunny. Ed passed from this Earth in the loving arms of his wife on Thursday, May 3, 2018 from complications due to a recent illness. Ed is preceded in death by both his parents and three brothers (Arpod, William,and Harold Artwohl) and two sisters (Viola Long and Sadie Artwohl).
Ed was educated in the Allentown public school system and joined the U.S. Army on
Dec 2, 1956 where he did basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Ed was then assigned to the 2nd Combat Battalion and sent to Keflavik, Iceland for a year where his job was to help hold the airbase for 48 hours while tankers refueled our military aircraft. Upon return to the East Coast, Ed was assigned to the 3rd US Cavalry at Fort Meade, Maryland, where he drove both Personnel Carriers and M-60 Tanks. Ed was released from the US Army on Dec 2, 1958.
Ed relocated to the Northern Virginia area where he attended the University of Maryland at College Park Ed spent the next 30 plus years in the marketing field first employed by the now defunct Underwood Typewriter Company from early 1959 to early 1962. Ed then was employed by the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) from Feb 16, 1962 to his retirement on April 30, 1987. His last IBM career position was as a Large Accounts Marketing Executive.
Ed’s first marriage in September 1955 to Ann Jane Peacock resulted in divorce in August 1973, but produced his three surviving children. His eldest son, Scott Roger Artwohl, was born in 1962 and his twins were born in 1965. Twin son, Todd Michael Artwohl (Donna Scholl), and Ed’s twin daughter, Lisa Beth Roche (Mrs. David), and his two surviving grandsons, Brendan Roche born in 1989 and Connor Roche born in 1993 all reside in Allentown, PA.
Ed married his surviving second and very devoted wife of 40 plus years, Rita Johnston Artwohl in Oct 1978 They maintained homes in both Alexandria, Virginia and the Annapolis, Maryland area prior to relocating permanently to Florida in Oct 1996 to the Lexington Golf and Country Club in South Fort Myers, where Ed was affectionately known as “The Mayor” due to his winsome personality.
Over Ed’s lifetime, he was an avid sportsman, enjoying many summer weekends sailing the Chesapeake Bay on his 40 foot Cutter vessel, named “The Artime”, fishing, playing tennis and softball, and then total dedication to his golf game once he moved to Florida.
Ed will be sadly missed by both his family and his countless friends. A memorial celebration of Ed’s life will be planned for a later date.
