Born in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Don’s passion for science and education led him to a distinguished academic career. He spent many years teaching physiology at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he inspired generations of students and colleagues. After his retirement, he and his beloved wife, Pauline, moved to Venice, Florida, before later settling at The Glenridge in Sarasota.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Irene Stratton; his sister, Joan Conrad; and his brother, Jim Stratton (Mary). He is survived by his devoted wife, Pauline; his sister, Pat Polazzo (Wayne); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will carry on his memory.
A man of many interests, Don found joy in golfing, birding, traveling, singing, and playing the piano. He was also an avid supporter of the arts, frequently attending plays and operas. A gifted writer, he authored one medical textbook and five mystery novels. His professional affiliations included membership in the Physiological Society and the Mystery Writers of America.
Don’s life was rich with passion, purpose, and the love of family and friends. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed by Pauline, who loved him dearly, and by the many others whose lives he touched with his warmth, intellect, and gentle spirit.
