Donald Lamar Evitt, a proud United States Air Force veteran, accomplished pilot, and devoted father and grandfather, passed away after a life defined by service, adventure, and achievement.
Born on January 6, 1935, in Harrison County, Tennessee, near Chattanooga, Donald carried a strong sense of purpose from an early age. He excelled in school and was known throughout his life as outgoing, well-dressed, and disciplined, with a natural confidence that earned him admiration from friends and family alike.
Donald graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Military Science. His distinguished military career included earning his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant Pilot Officer on May 30, 1955, and later rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1971 at the age of only 36. As a pilot officer and Vietnam veteran, he flew some of the Air Force’s highest-performance fighter aircraft and spent two years flying the ultra-high-altitude Martin RB-57F Canberra.
Following his military service, Donald continued his passion for aviation in the private sector. Beginning in 1982, he flew Gulfstream business jets internationally for two decades, piloting the G2, G3, G4, and G5 aircraft around the world. His career reflected both exceptional skill and a deep love for flying.
Donald resided in Sarasota County, Florida, in Nokomis in his later years. He was a man who embraced life fully, cherishing his many accomplishments and the memories he created along the way. Among his most treasured moments were earning his wings and commission at age 20, sharing in the joy of his daughter’s college graduation from Texas A&M University and celebrating his marriages including memorable honeymoons to Hawaii.
He is survived by his two children: Pamela Evitt O’Connor (Michael) and Douglas L. Evitt, three grandchildren: Keegan Trudeau (Phillip) Kylie Baker (Forrest), Colton O'Connor, all of whom he was immensely proud of as accomplished adults as well as 4 great grandchildren, Parker, Berkley, Harrison and Everett, whom he loved deeply.
He is also survived by his ex-wife Elizabeth Margaret Baumer (Doug and Pam's Mother). And his very special girlfriend/ companion, Janice C. "Jan" Amara whom he spent his last five years going out on dinner dates, Sunday brunch and meeting up with friends and spending long hours discussing politics.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Jessie Evitt, as well as his former wives, Lois Catherine Alexander, and Betty Joanne Motley.
In his personal life, Donald enjoyed golf, reading, staying active at the gym, attending plays and movies, and dining out. He was often described as meticulous, well put together, and in excellent physical condition, maintaining his sharp appearance and charisma throughout his life.
Donald retired fully in 2003 at the age of 68, having most recently flown the Gulfstream V with a 6,000 nautical mile range—an aircraft befitting a man who spent his life reaching great heights.
He will be remembered for his remarkable career, his love of flight, and the full and adventurous life he lived.
A Celebration of Don's Life is pending.
