Derek was born July 12, 1954 in Elizabeth, NJ. Derek enjoyed living in Monmouth County in the towns of Little silver and Red Bank. His favorite home was his crown jewel; a century home located in Red Bank that was in his family for generations.
Derek attended graduate school at Drew University earning his Doctor of Medical Humanities. He was an exceptional dog trainer specializing in evaluating dog behavior. To earn his PHD Derek put together the two things he loved to do and authored his dissertation on how dogs affect autistic children, earning his PHD. Although this was a wonderful achievement, Derek was a grounded, humble man and never felt the need to advertise it.
Secretly, he was a talented artist painting in watercolor and oil. He loved visiting horse farms and enjoyed seeing all the farm animals. His favorite subject, talking dog behavior and was fantastic at helping families with their dogs. Christmas and Easter Holidays were a special time for him which he loved to celebrate with the people he loved most, creating cherished memories.
Those of us who knew Derek knew him for his unexpected witty humor that would make you laugh, his steadfast love and unwavering loyalty. He was a brilliant, beautiful soul that will be deeply missed. It is a heart-breaking loss, and life just will not be as much fun without him.
Derek is survived by his three brothers David, Brian, John and his beloved friend Anna.
