Retiring to Florida after living many years in Connecticut, Bette Ann Conner died peacefully in her sleep in the wee hours of the morning at the age of 92 at her home in Bradenton, Florida, on September 9, 2024. She was the daughter of Claire Ann (Schotanus) and John McKenzie Conner of Millburn, New Jersey.
Bette is survived by Ruth Jansson, her wife and partner of 44 years; nephews Donald Conner of Washington State, John Conner of California, and Rick Conner of Utah and their families; sisters-in-law Erika Bourget of Maine and Erna Ostrom of New York and their families; and many long-time friends.
After initially working as a marketing analyst, Bette changed careers and spent many wonderful years teaching second grade in Darien, Connecticut. An avid and life-long boater, Bette was a Life Member of the United States Power Squadrons and of the Norwalk (CT) Sail & Power Squadron, where she served as the Education Officer and taught the public boating class for many years. As a certified Vessel Safety Examiner, Bette performed safety checks on private boats at local marinas and yacht clubs. She held a 100-ton Master Coast Guard Captain’s License and was a serious and capable helmsman and navigator, spending many wonderful years boating on Long Island Sound and beyond. One of her fondest memories is spending six weeks cruising the inland waterways of the United States and Canada with Ruth on their Nordic Tug, Annie B.
Bette was also quite the equestrian in her day, winning many ribbons at horseshows riding dressage and jumping. After retiring from teaching, Bette volunteered with Pegasus, a therapy-riding group for disabled children and adults.
With an understated wit, a great sense of humor, and an endearing, charming way about her, Bette will be missed by all who knew her.
Please celebrate Bette’s wonderful life by going for a walk on the beach with your best friend. And while you are there, do what Bette always did—pick up a shell or two and put it in your pocket.
Charitable donations may be sent to the Norwalk Sail & Power Squadron, 6 Strawberry Ridge Rd., Ridgefield, CT 06877, Tidewell Hospice (tidewellfoundation.org), or a charity of your choice.
