Alice Elberta Ludwig began her journey on October 2nd, 1940 in Avon, South Dakota, where she grew up as daughter to Presbyterian minister Albert and mother Bertha. She was raised as a preacher’s kid along side her sister Ellen and her brother Lester, and here is where her deep and abiding relationship with God started.
She first found love frolicking in the waves of Lake Manawa in Council Bluffs, Iowa where she met and married her lifelong love of 62 years, David. Soon after she became a loving mom to daughter Melinda.
Throughout her courtship, marriage and motherhood Alice followed her dream by earning a nursing degree from Jamestown College in North Dakota. Choosing to specialize in obstetrics, she balanced being a wife and mom with helping new mothers and their babies. She then furthered her education, earning a masters degree in counseling and using it to counsel nursing students. She enjoyed a long and fulfilling career in the nursing profession.
She also expanded her relationship with God. She served in many churches and in many roles, whether as deacon, singing in the choir, participating in bell choir, or volunteering.
Along the way she discovered a passion for knitting and it blossomed into a ministry that drew her ever closer to God. Soon she was knitting prayer shawls, baby blankets, afghans, sweaters and socks! All her projects were infused with her deep love for God and for its recipients.
Knitting became her constant companion throughout her life to celebrate new babies or birthdays. It also got her through grueling trips to doctors and chemotherapy treatments.
She fought valiantly with courage and grace against cancer. She survived uterine cancer, then breast cancer, then pancreatic cancer and finally lung cancer. But she never let that enemy steal her cheerful nature nor her loving heart nor her faith. That faith continued to guide and uplift her through her trials.
She fiercely loved her family, husband, daughter, son-in-law, grandson, sister, brother, in-laws, nieces, nephews, the list continues… She also deeply loved her friends! And all that love was returned tenfold.
She flourished as an inspiring example to many!
Now she is deeply at peace, resting in the warm embrace of our Lord. Alice leaves an afterglow of love for all left behind to bask in!!
SHE LOVED, SHE SERVED, SHE FOUGHT, SHE WON!!!
