Russ was an amazing man who lived a very full life. He was born to Russell and Anna Ceurvels on July 23, 1925 and grew up in Hyde Park (Boston). He wanted to serve in WWII, so when he was 16 he lied about his age and joined the US Navy. The second destroyer he served on, the USS Nelson was torpedoed, the stern blown off and twenty-four sailors lost their lives. After that he requested transfer to the South Pacific because "that's where the action is."
He returned home from the war and married his long time sweetheart, Katherine “Kaye” Gill. After graduating from University of Miami with a degree in Marine Biology he came back to Boston to work for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Division of Marine Fisheries. He was responsible for creating two marine laboratories (Salem and Newburyport). In 1973 he was named Scientist of the year. He was an author on several technical papers--including seminal work on Red Tide.
He retired to Englewood Florida in the early 1980 and quickly became the go to neighborhood handyman. He and Kaye enjoyed socializing, playing bridge, and attending local theater. He was also active in the Englewood Elks Lodge. Russ was predeceased by his wife, Kaye in 2010 and his son John in 2016. A few years after Kaye passed away he was fortunate to find love again with Johanna “Jody” Herook who was also recently widowed. To the amusement of all their children they met through an online dating service and quickly discovered they had much in common. They spent the remaining years together.
Russ is survived by three daughters, Sandy Stone, Karen Fitch and Mary Labrecque, their husbands, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
His quick wit, intelligence, caring nature and love of family will be sorely missed.
