Around the age of 12, George went to live with his Uncle and Aunt, Cornelius and Eloise Lockett in Little Rock, California. These were formative years for George as he assisted his Uncle on the Turkey farm they had. Uncle Neil helped build up the small town. George maintained relationships with this side of the family for life.
He enlisted in the Navy in the 60's and was shipped off to Vietnam. He didn't speak much of those years but he served his country quietly and faithfully earning the title of a Vietnam Veteran.
George worked as a Merchant Seaman for many years and traveled the world many times over. Throughout the years, He worked for companies such as Chevron and Cal State Hayward. He also worked on Mare Island for a spell and was a part of the Seafarers Union.
George and Sylvia met as they lived in the same apartment complex in the SF Bay area. It was Sylvia's little brothers who inquired if Sylvia knew her neighbor, George. So it was inevitable, they met and married on November 15, 1975.
George and Sylvia established their lives in Vallejo, CA in 1976 and were married 49 and a half years until Sylvia's passing in 2025. They had one daughter, Andrea.
George was a straightforward, practical man. Like his wife, he was funny without trying to be. He was faithful to provide for his wife and family. Even though he could be persnickety to some, one thing that could be said about him is, "He aint lyin though!" You often knew where George stood on something. He had nicknames for just about everyone. He was always good about keeping in touch with his family and would speak on the phone with them (especially Uncle Floyd) even texted his daughter quite a bit at one time. He loved to travel and enjoyed fishing, taking many trips with Sylvia and Andrea. He was a Deacon at Temple Baptist Church in Richmond under his longtime friend, Pastor Ronald Burris.
George had the same main friends most of his adult life, the late Al Spencer, the late Henry Monroe and Hezekiah Bolton.
On August 15th, with his daughter beside him, George passed away peacefully in his sleep due to a long illness. The last 2 months of his life were full of drama and new helpers who God sent to the family with much practical assistance. George was very independent even til the end trying to live like normal even when his body betrayed him. He made many laugh and love and allowed people to exercise their "fruits of the spirit" with him. Many good moments were made.
George is preceded in death by his parents; George and Clara Lockett; his brother Floyd; all 4 of his sisters, Elizabeth (Queenie), Emma Jean, Frances and Barbara Ann (Bobby Ann) and his lovely wife, Sylvia.
