Sacramento, California - William Douglas Elmore, known as Doug, passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2025, at the age of 82 after living with Parkinson's disease for many years. Doug was the epitome of a true southern gentleman, beloved by his family and community for his warmth, humility, generosity, sharp acumen, dry sense of humor, and deep dedication to his family.
Doug was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to William Henry and Margaret Elma Elmore. He graduated from University of South Carolina in 1965, majoring in business administration and was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. After college, he joined the Peace Corps where he was assigned to a small town in Brazil working in community development. He was partnered with Pam, a California girl, who would later become his wife.
Following his time in Brazil, he worked for his friend "Big Ed" as Assistant Dean of Men at "the real" USC and then was called to the military. He reunited with Pam in New Orleans while training for the Navy, and knowing he would be stationed in Japan for three years, he asked her to accompany him as his wife. He became a Naval officer and they lived in a true style Japanese home while stationed outside of Tokyo.
When he returned to the USA in 1970, he was hired by Xerox in Phoenix, AZ and soon after landed employment with Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate Company in Downtown Sacramento. This is where he found his true vocation as a land sales broker. He met many great life-long friends and went on to become a founding member of Brown, Stevens, Elmore, and Sparre Commercial Real Estate Company in 1976. Doug helped the county of Sacramento grow and flourish working on projects like Serrano, Gold River, and Anatolia.
One of Doug's life passions was antique wooden boats, and he worked with Sierra Boat in Carnelian Bay, Lake Tahoe to help restore boats to their original glory. He was a member of the Tahoe Yacht Club, Antique Classic Boat Society, and served on the board for the Tahoe Maritime Boat Museum. He spent many summers in Tahoe enjoying time with friends, family, and his beautiful boats.
Additionally, he had a love of history and geography, both within the US and beyond. He loved traveling with his wife to many places including Africa, China, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. When not traveling, he could often be found at a Sacramento Kings game, as he was an avid fan with season tickets from the very start. He also spent many Sunday afternoons rooting for the 49ers. Other past engagements include membership of the Sutter Club, Del Paso Country Club, and being on the board for St. Hope Academy.
Doug was a devoted family man, putting his heart and soul into making sure his family was provided with everything including lots of love. Whether it was coaching soccer, pulling kids behind the boat, taking his family on fantastic vacations, he was always there. Doug will be greatly missed by Pam, his loving wife of nearly 58 years, as well as his grateful children Perrin Stephens, Courtney Fabian (Matt), and Jeb Elmore (Ling), grandchildren Corinne, Dylan, Kassidy, and Slater as well as sister Margaret of Ft. Mill, SC. He was preceded in death by his brother Alan. We want to thank Theo and Jay who provided him with the best care in the last year.
There will be a Celebration of Life Wednesday, June 25 at Fremont Presbyterian Church, 5770 Carlson Drive, Sacramento, CA 95819 at 2 p.m. All guests are invited to join the family at Del Paso Country Club, 3333 Marconi Ave, Sacramento, CA 95821 following the service.
In his honor, donations can be made to www.michaeljfox.org (http://www.michaeljfox.org/) for Parkinson's disease research.
