San Francisco lost the dearly loved tenor and poet, Daniel Gabriel Anthony Pociernicki, on Thursday April 23, 2026 in Sacramento, CA. He joins his beloved wife, Christine Springer (1/13/1958-7/14/2024). Daniel had just turned 89 years old.
Daniel was a long time resident of San Francisco and was a member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus for 25 years, from 1984 to 2009. He was also a writer, a stage director, a teacher, a certified massage therapist, and a soloist in several San Francisco Bay Area Christian Science Churches.
Born on April 19, 1937 on Larkins Way in the South Side of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Daniel was active in music since he was five years old. He worked in early television in Pittsburgh and could be heard singing for many wedding parties in the South Side of Pittsburgh in the 1940s and 50s.
Daniel received a B.A. from Duquesne University, did graduate work at Yale University, and was awarded an Artist’s Diploma from The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He completed his Master of Music degree from The University of New York at Stony Brook, where he studied under Adele Addison.
Daniel performed in oratorio, opera and recitals in Russia, Poland, Canada and throughout the USA, including in New York and California. His career includes singing with the Amato Opera, The Canadian Opera Company, Chautauqua Opera, Hart House Opera, Interstate Opera, Opera Orchestra of New York, Pittsburgh Opera Company and, of course, the San Francisco Opera Company.
Daniel loved to offer the gift of song and story with local performances of his own writing and of some classics, often partnering with dear friends and musicians for holiday concerts in San Francisco.
Daniel had a kind and caring approach to life. He found pleasure and meaning in poetry, singing, Wonder Woman, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates, Steelers, poker and the ocean. His greatest loves were family, friends, God and the pure, blessed miracle of being alive.
Daniel, you will be missed. Your performances were an inspiration of love for life and humanity. Some of Daniel’s writing can be found in the first publication of his poetry, Inside My Heart.
Daniel is survived by his son Alex Pociernicki, daughter-in-law Charyl Pociernicki, granddaughter Alyssa Pociernicki, along with many other cherished nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The resonance of his beautiful voice and spirit will live on in all who knew him.
Daniel Gabriel Anthony Pociernicki, my father, my friend, my best man. For 53 years of my life you have always been there and guided me with love and care, with a hand to hold. Now the time has come for you to take another journey, and hold hands with your beloved Christie. I know you will always be with me until we hold hands again. Your loving son, Alex.
