A true patriot, he proudly served his country for six years, including a deployment during the Vietnam War. In recognition of his service, Tom was honored with a Final Salute and an Honor Walk through the Corridor of Respect at Hines VA Medical Center.
Tom was a devoted husband to his wife, Karen McClure, with whom he shared 34 years of marriage. He was a caring stepfather to Justin Braatz (Nadija) and a loving father to Nicole Wede (Jim). He was also a cherished “Papa” to Teagan, Jacob, and Benjamin Wede, and a loving grandfather to Jessica Braatz. Tom earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Illinois University and went on to obtain numerous IT certifications. Professionally, he worked as an IT engineer and was truly a tech wizard.
Tom’s love of adventure took him to several countries, both on land and aboard cruises. He enjoyed martial arts and earned a Level 2 black belt. He also loved playing golf, cooking gourmet meals for family and friends, taking sunset walks on the beach during his winters at their Fort Myers home, and cheering on his beloved Chicago Bears. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren, who brought him tremendous pride and joy.
