Susan Shoellhorn Knudson, age 88, passed away Friday, April 28, 2023, surrounded by her family. Susan was the daughter of the late Ralph and Almera (nee: Peterson) Shoellhorn. Susan was born in Elgin, IL and raised in West Dundee. She was a resident of Gurnee and previously of Wilmette where she raised her family.
Susan was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Gurnee, IL and a former member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Lindenhurst, IL, where she served as past-president of the Savvy Seniors group. She was also a member of the Antioch Women’s Club and Catholic Women’s Club. Susan volunteered with the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, IL and Lake County Winchester House, formerly in Libertyville, IL. Susan had a vivacious personality and was a treasured friend to many. She loved to laugh and was actively engaged with her neighbors, bridge games and exercise classes. More than anything she cherished time with her family, loved traveling, enjoying a good meal, playing card games and cheering on the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.
She will be dearly missed by her adoring husband of 63 years, John A. Knudson; her four children, Kent (Kathleen) Knudson of Mundelein, IL, Nancy (William) Itzenhuiser of Naperville, IL, Richard (Wendy) Knudson of Cunningham, TN, Brad (Martha) Knudson of Northbrook, IL; her eleven grandchildren: Bradley (Lanie) Knudson and Kevin Knudson; Jacie, Alexander and Kailee Itzenhuiser; Kyle, Nicholas and Emma Knudson; Zachary, Nicole and Kara Knudson; her great-granddaughters McKenna and her younger sister due this summer; brother Kent Shoellhorn; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her older brother Richard Shoellhorn; sisters-in-law, Patricia (Richard) Shoellhorn and Marilyn (Kent) Shoellhorn; nephew Scott Shoellhorn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6401 Gages Lake Road, Gurnee, IL on Saturday, June 10, 2023, 9:30 A.M. with Reverend Chris D. Ciaston officiating. Relatives and friends may meet at the church from 8:30 A.M. until Mass begins.
Private interment at Fort Sheridan National Cemetery in Lake Forest, IL will be held at a later date.
