1946-2023
John T Shriber, 76, of Montgomery, IL passed away on July 13, 2023, at Rush University Hospital in Chicago.
John was born on August 20, 1946, in Aurora, at St. Charles Hospital. He attended West Aurora Schools,
including Greenman Grade School, Franklin Junior High, and West Aurora H.S. where he graduated with the class of 1964. During his time at West High John was an accomplished athlete playing football and basketball, and later he played baseball and basketball with the Aurora Church League.
He joined the Navy in 1965, and went on to serve two tours of duty in Vietnam with the “Brown Water Navy” in the Mekong Delta, as a gunner on a River Boat.
After his discharge John became a mail carrier working from the Aurora Post Office, covering every route in the City, retiring in 2005, after more than 30 years on the job.
John was a beloved and active member of his community, spending countless hours volunteering at First Presbyterian Church and Dreyer Medical Clinic.He was an avid golfer and a member of Cedardell Golf Club, Plano where his foursome included longtime pals from the Post Office.
He and Carolyn loved to travel, taking cruises to South America and Nova Scotia. They also enjoyed long weekends, with good friends, at The Cove at Lake Geneva. He was lovingly known as “Pops” to his
many friends, and loved nothing more than cheering for his Chicago Bears on a Sunday afternoon. He also had a weakness for anything barbecued, especially ribs, a cold beer on the deck, watching the rain, and immersing himself in a good movie on a Saturday afternoon, with a big bowl of popcorn.
John is survived by his loving partner and companion of 14 years, Carolyn Roesner; two brothers, Jim (Candace) Shriber and Carl (Carole) Shriber, several nieces and nephews, and devoted friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith (Ziegler) Da Ronco and William Howard Shriber; his wife,
Carolyn (Benson) Shriber; sister, Jo Anne Strong; a brother, William Shriber; and a nephew, Kevin Shriber.
Family and friends are invited to join in a visitation, and Celebration of John’s Life on Sunday, August 27th at 1:00 p.m. at Montgomery VFW Post 7452, 121 N. River St., Montgomery, IL.
