Ina was born in Neuotting, Germany and arrived in the United States with her parents and younger brother in 1949. They settled on a farm in Indiana and shortly afterwards relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana.
She graduated from Indiana University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and teaching certificate. Additionally, Ina received a Master’s degree from National-Louis University in 1990. She worked at Literacy Volunteers of America as well as Saint Charles East and West Chicago High Schools.
Ina was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved being deeply involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings, traveling, and playing games. Ina had a very positive and encouraging presence and had a gift for welcoming anyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eizens and Aina Salmins, as well as her brother, Karl Salmins.
Ina is survived by her husband, Guntis Kalnajs, daughters Inga Theeke and Viki Deardorff with her husband Dana Deardorff, and grandchildren, E Theeke, Nora Theeke, Josh Deardorff and Ryan Deardorff.
One of her favorite quotes was, “Find joy and purpose in every day.”
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
A Memorial Service is scheduled at Crown Hill Cemetery Chapel, 700 West 38th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana on May 19, 2023 at 10:00 AM.
