Hugo Schramm, long time member of the Chicago Basha, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the age of 98. Many know Hugo for his lifelong work as an accomplished bookkeeper in the western suburbs of Chicago. Working up until the final weeks of his life, Hugo regrets missing this tax season as his work was the joy of his life. Born and raised in Fussen, Germany, Hugo immigrated to the United States as a young man. He served in the United States Army during WW II as part of the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations, completing a tour of duty in Shanghai, China. Following the end of the war, Hugo became involved in a veterans organization for those who had known as the CBI, veterans organization was formed for the people who had served in China, Burma and India known as the CBI. Hugo was a prolific researcher, networker and writer who frequently contributed articles for the national CBI organization. When it was decided to form a local CBI chapter, Hugo held numerous positions including 40 plus years as editor of the CBI Betelnut newsletter for the Chicago Basha. Hugo was preceded in death by parents Hugo and Helena, sister Cilly (Gunter) Kuznik and brother Fritz (Marlis) Schramm. He is survived by sister Lottie (Floyd) Danley; sons, Ron (Ann) Schramm and Eric (Kathy) Schramm; grandchildren, Ellen (Hunter) Schramm and Zachary (Jessica) Schramm as well as his great grandson Merrick. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the VFW in Downers Grove. Special thanks to Michelle at Home Instead who took wonderful care of Hugo during his final weeks, as well as Good Samaritan Hospital Unit 40 in Downers Grove and ManorCare in Hinsdale. A remembrance of Hugo’s long life will occur at the Downers Grove VFW, 5101 Belmont Rd, Downers Grove, Illinois from 3-5 pm on Friday, March 31, 2017.
