Born on March 21, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, Hugh spent his youth in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood and made his home in Morgan Park, where he built a life centered on faith, family, service, and community.
Hugh proudly served in the United States Army with overseas assignments in Italy, Austria, and Germany. During his military service, he earned both the Rifle Marksmanship Badge and the Sharpshooter Badge. He was also a proud member of the American Legion Post 615 in Tinley Park for more than 60 years.
After returning home from military service, Hugh married the love of his life, Joan M. Gahan. Together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, raising their family in Morgan Park and creating a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
Hugh spent his career as a commercial real estate lender. He was respected for his integrity, vision, and professionalism, as well as the lasting relationships he built with customers, colleagues, and friends throughout his career.
Hugh was a man of deep faith. He was an avid reader with a lifelong love of history, maps, travel, camping, and he especially enjoyed a good ice cream cone. He took great pride in restoring and caring for the historic Morgan Park home that he and Joan lovingly made their own. A loyal Chicago Bears fan through the good and the bad, he was also an Indianapolis 500 ticket holder for 65 years. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his easy-going nature, quiet strength, and sense of humor.
Hugh was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan M. Gahan; his mother, Martha E. Schrodi Gahan; his father, Hugh V. Gahan; and his grandson, Matthew Kocher.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Kocher (John), Cheryl Gahan, and Margaret Gahan; his granddaughters, Jacquelyn Mattera and Sydney Mattera; his nephew, David Mansfield; and many extended family members and friends.
His legacy lives on through the values he instilled in those he loved: integrity, kindness, service, faith, and a love of spontaneous laughter. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Private funeral services will be held, followed by interment with military honors at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Hugh's memory to plant a tree through the Living Tribute program in his memory.
