He was born December 21, 1928 in Chicago to Harold and Louise (Omehen) Spence.
A graduate of St. Rita High School in Chicago, Harold also served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Isherwood during the Korean War.
He married Charlotte Hockensmith on November 15, 1952 and together they raised 7 children.
As a small business owner Harold established and ran Ess-Kay Enameling Inc. in Chicago for 30 years and then worked for, and retired from American Bank Note Co. in Burbank.
Involved in the Boy Scouts of America, and instrumental in the startup of the first Co-Ed Explorer Post in the Chicago area, he loved traveling and camping with his family and the Explorers.
He and Charlotte traveled extensively throughout the United States during retirement while spending summers at their home at Woodhaven Lakes in Amboy, Illinois; winters at their home at Lakeside Terrace in Fruitland Park, Florida; and finally settling at Fox Knoll in Aurora, Illinois in 2013.
Harold served as an usher at St. Jane de Chantal Church and was an active member of the Christian Family Movement at St. Symphorosa Church in Chicago, a proud member of The Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. Rhine Post #2729, and Amvets Post #103.
He loved music and enjoyed playing his keyboard for entertaining and sing-a-longs. He also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and board games, as well as designing and making crafts to sell or give away to friends and family in his spare time.
Harold is survived by his wife, Charlotte and four children, Donald (Barbara), Richard (Shirley), Harold (Carla), and Kenneth (Debbie), 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, daughter-in-law, Mary Spence and son-in-law, James Tropp.
He is preceded in death by his sons, Michael and William, and his daughter, Linda Tropp.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 9:00 am until the time of memorial mass at 11:00 am at Fox Knoll Chapel, 421 N. Lake St., Aurora, IL 60506.
