Ewing Lafetra Lusk III, 78, of Downers Grove, IL passed away on May 16, 2022. Known as “Rusty” for his red hair, he leaves behind a loving family and rich memories full of kindness and good humor. Rusty was born on September 28, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri. He received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 1965 and his PhD from the University of Maryland in 1970, before coming to Illinois to join the mathematics department of Northern Illinois University.
At NIU, Rusty met the love of his life, Brigid, with whom he spent forty happy years.
NIU was also the start of his distinguished career in computer science. He joined the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory in 1982. Rusty was involved with implementation of the MPI message passing standard, parallel performance analysis tools, and system software for clusters. Before retiring in 2012, Rusty won an R&D 100 award for his work in parallel computing, received the University of Chicago’s medal for distinguished performance, and served as the division’s director. He retired as an Argonne Distinguished Fellow and a senior fellow of the Computation Institute of the University of Chicago. He was the author of six books and more than a hundred research articles in mathematics, automated reasoning and parallel computing.
Rusty is survived by his wife, Brigid Lusk; his sister, Molly Lusk; his sons, Andrew and Richard Lusk; his daughters-in-law, Leah and Liisa Lusk; his grandchildren Charlie, George and Anna Lusk; and his dear cats, Buttons and Peggotty. Donations can be made in Rusty’s name to the West Suburban Humane Society.
