The strong tailwind named Edward J. Gleich, Jr. shifted to a whisper on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at the age of 91. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Gleich, who lovingly cared for and remained by his side through all the gentle breezy days as well as life’s changing tides. He was Loving father of the late Debbie (late Frank) Pellegrino, Mark (Dawn) Gleich, Andrea (Mike) Smagacz, Lynda McDavid, Christine (Arnie) Klemm, Edward (Cynthia) Gleich III, the late Maria (Don) Gifford and Michael (Jennifer) Gleich. Adored grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 9. Cherished uncle of many nephews and nieces, along with many cousins and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Sr, and Harriet Gleich, his sister, Elaine (late Rich) Goss, and brother Ronald (late Melody) Gleich.
Ed’s family was his utmost priority, and he worked tirelessly as an entrepreneur and business owner to ensure their well-being. He strategically planned vacations around Lake Michigan, ensuring proximity to his workplace that allowed for daily commutes and to spend leisure time with his family. Ed and Carol marked a milestone in the year 2000 by retiring.
Ed’s creative spirit was characterized by his love of writing and working with his hands, which was demonstrated by the 43-foot sailboat that he designed and built in his workshop. He fashioned sculptures from copper radiator scraps and built various furniture pieces. Upon retirement, Ed designed and constructed his and Carol’s home on their Monee property, affectionately known as “The Land”. Over time, the more than 500 trees he planted have beautifully matured. As a master woodworker, Ed refined his skills during retirement, creating exquisite wooden boxes, sculptures and vases that he generously gifted, leaving lasting memories.
Ed lived boldly, loved fiercely yet guided gently with his wisdom.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Our Lady of the Woods Parish on Saturday, June 27th at 10731 W. 131st Street, Orland Park, IL. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:30am and Mass will begin at 10am. Interment private.
