Donald Harry Schmidt

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Don lived a life defined by service, innovation, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to his family. He proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard, attaining the rank of Lieutenant and served during the Vietnam War.

Don graduated from Millikin University before joining the family business, H.M. Schmidt Co. Inc., where he became the second-generation owner. Through his leadership, dedication, and vision, he continued the legacy established by his father while earning the respect of clients and colleagues throughout the industry. A gifted inventor and problem solver, Don held several patents across a variety of industries. He had a remarkable ability to see opportunities where others saw obstacles, and his ingenuity and perseverance left a lasting impact through both his inventions and his business accomplishments.

Above all else, Don was a devoted family man. He shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Elena “Bennie” Schmidt, whose companionship was one of the greatest joys of his life. He was a proud and loving father to Harry Schmidt (Margo) and Karl Schmidt (Jamie). Nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with his family, especially his grandsons, Brady and Ryan, whom he loved dearly and took immense pride in watching grow.

Don will be remembered for his quiet strength, sharp mind, steady guidance, and generous heart. Whether offering advice, solving a difficult problem, or simply being there for those he loved, he led by example with humility, kindness, and determination.

His legacy lives on through his family, the business he helped build and the lives he touched throughout his 83 years.

The Schmidt family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, support, and kindness during this difficult time.

Don will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

In accordance with Don and Bennie's wishes, no public services are planned. A private family military service will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery to honor his life and service to our country.
