It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Charlotte W. Ewing, 71, of Woodridge, Illinois. Charlotte left us on April 9, 2025 surrounded by family after a prolonged illness. Charlotte was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who cherished every moment she spent with her family.
Charlotte Mary Well was born October 30, 1953, in Chicago, the only child of Eva and Ludwig Well. She attended Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL and graduated in only three years. An academically strong student, Charlotte loved math and was very involved in music. She performed piano and accompanied other musicians at her school and even gave piano lessons to younger students.
Charlotte went to the University of Illinois Chicago and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in math education. She became a teacher at Highlands Junior High in LaGrange. Later, Charlotte switched careers to become an actuary, developing software that ran on mainframes and early desktop PCs.
On June 25, 1978, Charlotte married her husband, Tom Ewing. Together they raised three wonderful children. Charlotte had an unwavering commitment to family and dearly loved her children and, later, her grandchildren.
Charlotte never lost her passion for music and shared her gift as a pianist, performing at public concerts and at her church, where she is remembered for her beautiful piano playing. She was a long-time member of the Downers Grove Music Club, serving on the board of directors as Vice President of Artistic Development in charge of developing public concerts.
Charlotte enjoyed puzzles and games, gardening, and loved baking (especially cookies with her children and grandchildren). She enjoyed spending summers up at the cabin in Eagle River, Wisconsin with her family. Charlotte was also very active in her church, serving for many years as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Her generosity, grace, and devotion to family and friends will forever be remembered.
Charlotte is survived by husband, Tom Ewing; children, Stephanie (Casey) Quigley, Kristina (Luke) Phelps, and Paul (Lindsay) Ewing; grandchildren, Cooper Phelps (19), Royce Phelps (8), William Ewing (7), Thomas Quigley (7), Brynn Phelps (6), Joseph Ewing (6), and Ava Quigley (1).
In lieu of a traditional burial, a memorial will be held on Friday, May 16th at St. Luke’s Church, 5235 Fairview Avenue, Downers Grove, beginning at 9:30am, followed by a service at 11:00am. Charlotte’s remains will be scattered at the family’s lake home in Wisconsin at a private family event.
Charlotte’s family invites family and friends to a luncheon following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charlotte’s name to the Downers Grove Music Club (https://downersgrovemusicclub.org/donate.html) and the Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation (https://netrf.org).
