Alvin Graber Sr.

Alvin "Al" Graber, 86, of Homewood, Illinois, passed away on July 1, 2026, after a battle with congestive heart failure. Born on October 31, 1939, in New Orleans, Louisiana to Albert and Olga Graber. Al lived a life full of laughter, connection, and an unmistakable warmth that drew people to him like a magnet.

Al was a man who never met a stranger. There was no place he could frequent in New Orleans where someone did not know him, and children naturally migrated to him. He greeted everyone with a smile, and his great sense of humor made every encounter memorable. He loved jokes, loved being outside, and loved going places just to meet new people. When Hurricane Katrina forced him to relocate to Illinois, Al wasted no time making new friends. He immediately enveloped new colleagues and "partners," building community wherever he planted his feet. If there was any activity that involved social engagement, Al was always willing to participate.

Al was an exceptional spade and bid whist player, and he took his card game seriously. He belonged to several card clubs and, truth be told, Al would decide who was worthy enough to play with him. Beyond the card table, he enjoyed trips to the casino and simply being out in the world among people.

Halloween held a special place in Al's heart, and for good reason. It was his birthday, and he could never wait to celebrate. The holiday gave him one more excuse to enjoy life to the fullest, surrounded by the people he loved.

Al was also a devoted father. After the passing of his second wife, he made sure his youngest child received a college education, a testament to his dedication and resilience as a parent. He is survived by his son, Alvin Graber, Jr.; his daughters, Mia D'Andre Graber, Velvette Monique Graber; his eight grandchildren and his youngest sister, Shirley LaBeau. All of whom carry forward the love and laughter he so freely gave.

A man of deep Christian faith, Al walked through life trusting in the Lord and now rests peacefully in His eternal care. His family takes comfort in knowing he has gone home to glory.

A memorial service celebrating Al's life will be held on the weekend of August 21, 2026, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Details will be shared with family and friends as they are finalized.
