Dr. Virginia Anne Silagy Remko was a kind and caring soul whose life was a beautiful testament to love, devotion, and service. She passed away surrounded by the love of her family, who were the center of her world.
Virginia was deeply dedicated to her family, and nothing brought her more joy than spending time with them—especially her five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Whether it was attending school events, celebrating holidays, or sharing quiet moments together, she embraced every opportunity to be present in their lives. She cherished time at the lake and beach, where laughter echoed, memories were made, and hearts were full.
An avid and talented gardener, Virginia found peace and fulfillment in nature. Her gardens bloomed under her care just as the lives she touched flourished with her love and encouragement.
Virginia was a woman of extraordinary determination and intellect. She earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees—all from Northern Illinois University—each with a child on her hip, a symbol of her unwavering commitment to both her family and her education. Her passion for learning and teaching led her to faculty positions at Northern Illinois University, the State University of New York, and Auburn University.
Guided by her deep love for children, Virginia founded Montessori Academy in Montgomery, Alabama, in August 1982. From a humble beginning with just eight students, the Academy has grown and continues to shape young lives—an enduring legacy of her vision and care.
Virginia is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Dr. John Remko, and their three children: Dana (Kris Croeber) of Norfolk, VA; Jay (Ashley) of South Beach, OR; and Amy (David Lee) of Homewood, AL. She was a devoted grandmother (“GG”) to Emily (Brian Smith) of Fairfax, VA; Megan (Patrick Cassley) of Virginia Beach, VA; Skye Remko of Athens, GA; and Charlotte and Davis Lee of Homewood, AL. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Georgia Cassley of Virginia Beach, VA.
Dr. Virginia Remko’s legacy of compassion, education, and family devotion lives on in all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love and admiration.
