He is survived by his wife, Diana Joyner Schwab, and son, David Brooks Schwab.
He had a long career at the Central Intelligence Agency, focusing on Latin America. Following his retirement in 2000 from the Agency, he became a professor at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa while simultaneously earning a Ph.D.
During these teaching years, he wrote one of the crowning achievements of his life, publishing Guantanamo, USA: The Untold History of America’s Cuban Outpost. In addition, his family feels they were the beneficiaries of his singular talent of accumulating a lifetime of friends. He knew how to make, maintain, and renew these relationships from elementary school onwards. Stephen had a profound interest in the character, merit, and company of others. Also, he devoted considerable time in mentoring his students and helping them achieve their career goals.
