Thursday, June 22, 2023, at the age of 78 in Marianna, FL. He was born on April 4, 1945, in
Aurora, IL, where he spent his formative years alongside his five siblings. Charles graduated
from West Aurora High School in 1963 and immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving
his country with honor during the Vietnam War.
After his military service, Charles dedicated himself to a career with the Aurora Water and
Sewer Maintenance Department, where he worked as a civil works employee for many years.
He was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to maintaining the city's vital
infrastructure.
Charles met the love of his life, Darlene Gillette (Osby), and they married in 1968. Their bond
grew strong, and they embarked on a journey of love, companionship, and unwavering support.
Chuck and Darlene shared a remarkable marriage that spanned over five decades, filled with
joy, laughter, and cherished memories. Their love was a beacon of strength, nurturing their
children, and inspiring all who knew them.
Throughout his life, Charles was deeply involved in various churches, leaving a positive impact
wherever he lived. From Central Bible Church and Grace Bible Church in Aurora, IL, to Eastside
Baptist Church in Marianna, FL, he actively participated in the spiritual community. Alongside
his wife Darlene, Charles also devoted his time to numerous youth organizations, including
AWANA, Silver Birch Ranch, and Tanalian Bible Camp. His dedication to shaping young lives will
always be remembered.
In his leisure time, Charles cherished his morning routine of enjoying coffee and breakfast.
Whether it was at Harner's Bakery in Aurora or with his beloved "Breakfast Club" at The Waffle
Iron in Marianna, this daily ritual brought him joy and a sense of camaraderie.
Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife, Darlene Gillette (Osby), his parents Oliver and
Cora (Clark) Gillette, as well as his brothers James and Harlan Gillette. He is survived by his
children Melissa (Thomas) Gillette, Charlotte (Charles) Shopher, and Kristofer (Courtney)
Gillette, his siblings Ruth Ann Gillette, Cora Lee Morello (Gillette), and Bruce Gillette, five
grandchildren CJ, Gabriella, B'Rinna, Keith, Dustin, and three great-grandchildren Liam, Lorelei,
and Brigid.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of 4 South at Flowers
Hospital in Dothan, AL, for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to Charles
during his final days.

Saturday July 22nd at 1:00 PM.
