Donald Ray Hutchings

Donald Ray Hutchings, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 22, 2026. He was born on February 9, 1943, in DuQuoin, Illinois, to Carlie Hutchings and Virginia Hutchings (O'Keefe).

Don was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and faithful friend. He shared 61 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Sharron Hutchings. His love and devotion to Sharron were evident to everyone who knew him. Their life together was marked by a deep love, companionship, and commitment that remained strong throughout the years.

Don was also immensely proud of his two sons, Kenneth and Jeffrey Hutchings. He treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren, Andrew, Jasper, and Benjamin, and delighted in watching them grow. He also had a special place in his heart for his grand dogs, whom he loved to dote on and spoil.

Throughout his working life, Don dedicated himself to serving others through emergency services. He served as a director of the Herrin, Williamson County, and Jackson County ambulance services in Illinois. He helped provide care and leadership when people in his community needed it most. His work reflected his willingness to serve others and his commitment to his community.

Music was another important part of Don’s life. Throughout the years, he shared his musical gifts by singing in choirs and performing solos at church, as well as at weddings and funerals. He also played the piano and organ at various churches. His music became one of the ways he contributed to the life and worship of the church, leaving behind memories that will be cherished by those who heard him sing and play.

Don also served his country for 12 years as a reservist in the National Guard, Army, and Air Force.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Carlie and Virginia Hutchings, and his sister, Guyla Reichert.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sharron Hutchings; his sons, Kenneth Hutchings and Jeffrey Hutchings; his grandchildren, Andrew Hutchings, Jasper Hutchings, and Benjamin Hutchings; his siblings, Robert (Brenda) Hutchings and Carla Munton (Hutchings); and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Above all, Don will be remembered for his love of family. He found joy not in seeking attention for himself, but in loving and caring for the people who mattered most to him. His devotion to Sharron, pride in his sons, love for his grandchildren, affection for his grand dogs, service to others, and gift of music all helped make his life a blessing to those around him.

His life reminds us that a meaningful legacy is built through the people we love, the lives we serve, and the gifts we share.

A visitation will be held at Redeemer Evangelical Church on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. at the church.For those who would like to attend but are unable we will have a live feed of the service on Redeemer Evangelical Church’s Facebook page.
