Micheal Hellrud, a proud Vietnam War veteran, resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a devoted member of the Ho Chunk Nation, passed away on September 11, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of strength, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the earth.
Born to Evelyn (Whitewater) Shepard, Micheal carried the rich traditions and pride of his heritage throughout his life. After serving his country with honor in Vietnam, he returned home to build a life marked by the things he loved most.
Known for having a true "green thumb," Micheal found immense joy in tending to his garden and watching things grow. Indoors, his creative spirit shone through his crafting projects. Outside, he was never happier than when he was behind the wheel of his pickup truck, ready for whatever road or project came next.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn (Whitewater) Shepard; his sister, Gloria Godfrey; and his brother, Gary Shepard.
Micheal is survived by his loving son, Chris Hellrud, and his sisters, Willow (Shepard) Lawrey and Liana (Shepard) Kyser, who will forever cherish his memory, his stories, and his hardworking spirit.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant something in his honor or support a local veterans' organization.
