Jean grew up in Hecla, a small farming community in South Dakota. She graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She finished her working career with the Federal Aviation Administration as an Administrative Assistant. Tom and Jean were married on June 12th, 1976, and enjoyed 49 years of being best friends as well as being help mates.
Jean had a wonderful sense of humor. It wasn’t long before she would have you laughing and enjoying the conversation. She had a heart of compassion. She reached out to those she saw hurting or in need; whether visiting friends in the hospital, providing a listening ear and heart, and praying for others. Perhaps Jean's most recognizable gift was hospitality. She delighted in “preparing a place” for each guest or family. Everyone was treated specially and they felt special.
Jean gave her life to Jesus Christ as a freshman in college. She loved God and His Word. Her favorite quote was from Verna Berky.
“God is my Heavenly Father. He is the all-wise One, who controls all things. His essence is love and His deepest desire is for my good. Since He is loving enough to desire only good for me, wise enough to plan just what is best and powerful enough to accomplish what His love and goodness have planned, how can I lack any good thing?”
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Violet Oltman and a brother Thomas Oltman. She is survived by her husband Tom Hutchcraft, sister Paula Oltman, brother Steve Oltman, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jean’s Celebration of Life service will be held on August 8th, 2026, at 1:00pm at New Spring Church on 3435 Maizeland Road, Colorado Springs, CO. There will be a reception following the service and all are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to New Spring Church.
Jean will long be remembered as a faithful wife, a loving aunt, a loyal sister, a servant to others, and will undoubtedly hear from her Savior, Jesus Christ, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.”
