Born on September 8, 1933, in Memphis, Tennessee, Carl lived a life rich in faith, family, and adventure. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as an airplane mechanic before pursuing a long career as an architect, which he continued until retiring at age 90. On February 14, 1957, Carl married the love of his life, Lois “Virginia” Shirley—whom he affectionately called “Ginny”—beginning a 68-year marriage filled with devotion and joy, a true love story.
Carl was a man of dreams and curiosity. He loved the outdoors, camping beneath the stars, and cheering for his Denver Broncos. Music was always close to his heart—he played guitar and ukulele, recorded albums of his singing for his family, and cherished the music and culture of Hawaii, a place he always dreamed of visiting. He found joy in creating, whether drafting by hand or learning new technology in his later years, and approached life with an adventurous spirit that inspired those around him.
Above all, Carl’s greatest love was for his family and for Jesus Christ, whose example of love he lived out daily. He was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather—deeply treasured and impossible to forget.
Carl is survived by his wife, Virginia, his children, Winston, Warren and Missy, Mar’ti and Dave, and Holly and Joe.
Grandchildren:
David and Casey, Brad and Bria, Annabelle, Ian, Gracie, Summer, Wilder, Allie, Ginessa, Brittany and Ian, Jadie, Valerie, Livi, Christina, Nicolette, Carleigh, Genevieve, and Levi.
He was also blessed with 13 great-grandchildren who were the delight of his heart.
He was preceded in death by his young son, David “Wilder.”
Carl’s legacy of faith, love, and adventure lives on in every life he touched.
