He was born on February 10, 1939, in Enid, Oklahoma, to Lewis and Bertha King. David grew up on the family farm in Breckenridge, Oklahoma, that specialized in wheat and livestock. As a young boy he was very active in 4-H/FFA and in 1948 at the age of 9 years old, he attended the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City and won the junior division with his beloved Polled Hereford named “Shorty” – a remarkable accomplishment at such a young age for which his family was very proud.
As a teenager, he attended Garber High School where he made lifelong friends. He enjoyed music, singing, dancing, playing sports – especially basketball – and spent many hours working on the farm alongside his family. He also reveled in teasing and playing tricks on his older sister Yvonne, as most little brothers do. During high school he attended a party at a friend’s house in Enid where he met his life partner Lorraine. They have been married for 68 years.
He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in Business. And shortly thereafter, David and Lorraine moved to Fort Worth, Texas, with their young son Brandon, where David had been offered a job managing a Kroger grocery store. He excelled at leading teams and was asked to manage multiple store locations throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. During this time, they welcomed their first daughter Karla to the family.
And over the coming years as the family continued to grow, now with their third child Shannon in tow, they decided to follow their dream of designing their own home and moved to Parker, Texas, where they lived for 20 years.
David earned his MBA with an emphasis in Economics from East Texas State University while beginning his primary profession, pharmaceutical sales. He took great pride in his work and quickly climbed the corporate ladder. He covered the North Texas region for Pfizer and in 1993 his job took him to Southern California where his career culminated as Western Area Vice President of Sales for Novo Nordisk.
During retirement he and Lorraine were thrilled to have the opportunity to travel and live near their children and grandchildren, first in the Sacramento, California area and then in Monument, Colorado.
His personal passions included watching his favorite sports, specifically OSU and Dallas Cowboys football, organic gardening, beekeeping, reading, playing dominoes and cards, and fishing with his friends. But overall, his greatest joy was his family. He had immense pride in all of his children.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine King; son Brandon King (Laura Lane) and daughters Karla Santa Maria (Michael Santa Maria) and Shannon King (Frank Moore); five grandchildren Nicole, Eric, Kevin, Rachelle and Ryan; seven great grandchildren Reese, Charlotte, Callen, Dylan, Ariadne, Eliana, and Ida; sister Yvonne Stevens; and many nieces and nephews.
