March 22, 1947 – October 19, 2025
Michael James “Mick” Needham, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, artist, and historian, passed away suddenly at his home in Chico, California, on October 19, 2025. He was 78 years old.
Mick was born on March 22, 1947, in Gary, Indiana, to James and Hazel Needham. He grew up in Fontana, California, where his lifelong curiosity for craftsmanship, art, and history first began to take shape.
In 1970, Mick followed his high school sweetheart, Rebecca Pecnik, to Chico, California. They married in 1972 and went on to share 53 years of love, creativity, and countless adventures. Together they traveled throughout the American Southwest, drawn to its landscapes, art, and culture.
In 1971, Mick opened Needham’s Glass Studio, first located in Toad Hall (now the Phoenix Building) before moving to its longtime downtown Chico location in 1972. Over more than five decades, Needham’s Glass Studio became a Chico landmark and the longest-running sole proprietor business in Downtown Chico. His custom stained glass work—ranging from intricate lamps and windows to large church commissions—graces homes, businesses, and sanctuaries across the United States.
Beyond his mastery of stained glass, Mick was a teacher and mentor to many. He taught stained glass for years at Butte Community College, generously sharing his knowledge and inspiring new generations of artists. His studio employed dozens of talented glass craftspeople through the years, fostering an enduring legacy of creativity and craftsmanship in the Chico art community.
Mick’s artistic and historical expertise extended far beyond the studio. He was an avid collector of art, antiques, and railroad history, admired for his deep knowledge of design and craftsmanship. He lectured at the National Arts Club in Manhattan, where one of his Tiffany-style lamps hangs proudly today. Mick was also a passionate supporter of local museums and historical societies, frequently contributing his time, expertise, and treasures to preserve community heritage.
When not in his studio, Mick could often be found fly fishing or camping across the western United States, exploring small towns and antique shops in search of new discoveries. His sharp wit, vast knowledge, and generous heart made him unforgettable to all who knew him.
Mick is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca Needham; his sons, Aaron and his wife Tabitha, and Evan Needham; and his granddaughter, Marley, the jewel of his eye. He is also survived by Marley’s mother, Grace Grimes; his brother, Robert “Bobby” Needham and wife Kitty; his sisters, Diane Cordero, Katie Needham, and Sally and husband Tony Mendez; and his many beloved nieces and nephews.
Mick’s life was one of devotion—to his family, his craft, and his community. His legacy will continue to shine in the light passing through every window he created and in the lives of those who loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on what would have been his 79th birthday, March 22, 2026, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. at the Chico Card Center on Vallombrosa.
